Mompreneur #3 : Debbie Lee Cheetham

I was quite intrigued when I received Debbies e-mail. She runs two very different businesses from home. The first is her own Graphic Design business. Debbie was a Design Head and Brand Custodian before she had her first child. She managed the account for one of the biggest retailers in SA and like many mums (myself included) she expected to step right back into her job once her maternity leave was over. Being a mum changes your priorities though and Debbie went back to work but as a half day position. Anyone who has converted their role from a full day to a half day in the same company will know that what inevitably happens is that you end up carrying the same workload but at half the salary and with half the time to complete everything. Not cool.

In an effort to balance her work and home life Debbie resigned and took a lower position as a Senior Graphic Designer position in a smaller agency. This worked right up until her daughter made her arrival and decided that breast is best. Literally! This little one refused to drink from a bottle (13 different bottles actually), turned down sippy cups, normal cups, teaspoons and barely tolerated a syringe. Just like that, the decision was made. Debbie and her boobs were staying at home πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

It was the best decision. Debbie started DeeLee Design SA and hasn’t looked back since. She does print based design work specialising in Packaging Design, Brand Development and a bunch of other fun things. Her hours are a little crazy because she can only work mornings when her eldest is at school for half the day and at night when the little ones are asleep. Sounds hectic doesnt it? Do you remember that I mentioned she runs TWO businesses from home?…

The second business is DeeLee-Shus Bespoke Cake Creations. Yep. She bakes and decorates cakes and cupcakes and she is INSANELY good at it!!!! I’m not even going to say any more about this, I’m just going to let the pictures speak for themselves:

This one is my fave!
Look at the detail on the dress..

Those are just some of the cakes. Then there’s the corporate cupcakes…

As you can see, she has found her passion and she is loving it.

Debbie was so interesting to chat to. She is a hippie to the core and so different from anyone I know. She doesn’t even keep Panado at home! I really learnt quite a bit from our chat such as goats milk being the closest substitute for breastmilk (wish I had known that sooner) and most importantly that a kid throwing a tantrum isn’t necessarily a naughty/spoilt child.

Both of her kids have sensory processing issues. Loud sounds, bright lights and strong smells are too much for their little bodies to handle and result in them either ‘shutting down’ and closing themselves off completely from the outside world or acting out by screaming or being ‘wild’. Kids have meltdowns all the time so I can only imagine how difficult it must be for her little kiddos (her son is almost four and her daughter is 16 months) to deal with the overstimulation. I have been guilty of giving kids and their parents the stink eye when I see a child rolling on the floor and screaming for something or the other (less so now that I’m a parent but I still do it) but now I won’t just assume that the kid is a brat. Raising children is no walk in the park and I can only imagine how difficult it must be to watch your child have a meltdown in public and then see people throwing judgey looks your way when you really just want to scream “It’s not his fault! He’s a great kid! Just F Off with your judgey looks already!” Ok I threw that last bit in because that’s what I would say πŸ˜›

I am really enjoying this Mompreneur feature purely because I am meeting such interesting and diverse women.  I’m really glad I met Debbie. She has made me less sceptical of holistic healing and homeopathic treatment. To learn something new from someone or to have them change your view on something is a truly special thing. Plus she’s a Tattooed Mummy so she’s my people πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

P.S. a shoutout to Debbies mum who sounds amazing!! You rock and your daughter loves you immensely!

This is not a sponsored post. This series is my way of helping my fellow mums because we need all the help we can get! If you would like to be featured or you know someone who fits the Mompreneur role, you can e-mail me on
