What can you get for R250?

If your answer is ‘not bloody much’ then we’re on the same page. Recently I have been coming home with fewer and fewer packets of groceries even though I have been spending more than ever before. We don’t eat extravagantly and most of my trolley contains fruit and veg, yet I have been blowing the budget every week.

I recently saw a page called Community Gardens being recommended on FB for fresh fruit and veg directly from the farmers. I had no idea how much 12kg would be but the bargain hunter in me wanted the extra 3kg for R20 more 😂😂 so I placed an order.

My box of goodies arrived this morning and I couldn’t be happier! I love the surprise element (you get what’s freshest and in season) because now I’m forced to use what I’m given instead of buying the same veg every week. This is what R250 got me:

Look at that!! That is enough to last our family of 2 adults and 2 kids about two weeks easily. That’s R125 a week! The veggies and fruit are at varying degrees of ripeness so it won’t all be ready at the same time. Let me make a quick list of what was there:

  1. Potatoes
  2. Tomatoes
  3. Spinach
  4. Green beans
  5. Courgettes
  6. Brinjal
  7. Sweet potatoe
  8. Onions
  9. Butternut
  10. Sweet corn
  11. Plums
  12. Apples
  13. Papaya
  14. Beetroot
  15. Lettuce
  16. Cucumber
  17. Pepper
  18. Gemsquash
  19. Chives

How amazing is that? And I love that I’m supporting local farmers and cutting out the big retailers. This was delivered directly to my door with everything cool and fresh. If you’re in Gauteng why don’t you give them a try?

Off to plan my menu for the week! First up – parmigiana di melanzane because that brinjal is so damn beautiful!
