Women’s Month Mompreneur #4 – Marishka Mansill – Designer

In light of August being Women’s Month, I thought it would be the perfect time to promote some hard working mums. You could find the service provider you were looking for or be inspired to take that leap you’ve been dreaming of.

1. Tell me a little about yourself without including details of your family and work (it’s tough I know 😂)

I was raised by two amazing people who have always taught me how to be the strongest version of myself. It’s because of them that I am who I am today; a confident and ambitious woman. I love where I am and what I’ve achieved but I’m not done. I don’t “love” people but I’m good with people. With this said, I think a better way to put this is that I’m a very private person and I treasure my privacy. I love pulling my car into the garage and just spending time with my kids behind closed doors. I adore time with myself, I think this is one of the keys to a good life.

I’ve always believed in big dreams and magic if that makes any sense. I will never stop looking for more. I will never be finished because I continue to grow as a person and every journey I take on changes me.

2. How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

I have four kids and their ages are 8 a girl, 7 a girl, 5 a boy and 4 a boy. They were all born under five years and it was crazy, but the good kind of crazy.

3. What is your side hustle? And when did you start?

I am the creator of the brand Muppie Lounge. I design from the heart. Even though I have no real qualification in this area, I’m creative enough and confident enough to make it work. I design t-shirts and other cute things which I sell on my online store. I am also going to Aardklop this year which I am so incredibly excited about.

I launched my first range in October 2017 and am currently busy with my third range. I mostly design mom tees but it has grown a little. My focus is the jeans and tee mom, because this is me. I sketch whatever the range says and have a Mom related story or inspirational story behind each tee or sketch. It’s not just a t-shirt or a range, there’s a deep story behind each range.

I’ve always had a passion for fashion, design and writing. I studied interior design but found many years later that its actually fashion design I really fancy. I have big plans for Muppie Lounge and the Muppie Mummie.

4. What did you do before starting your own business AND what made you leave?

I was a SAHM (Stay at Home Mum) for 8 years. At this stage I think you can say I’m still a SAHM to my kids. I only work mornings and spend my afternoons with my kids. I don’t work from home which makes it easy to walk away once school is out at 12:30.  Before I became a mom, nearly 9 years ago, I was a small business owner where I evaluated Customer Service country wide (Mystery Shopping). I also loved this but sold the business a year before I fell pregnant.

5. How do you allocate your time between work and family?

I work strictly from 7:30 when I drop the kids at school until 12:30 when I fetch the boys. All the people and companies I work for know that I don’t answer my phone or emails after 12:30 and believe me they’ve tried. I use Monday mornings to plan my week. Without proper planning I run around like a chicken without a head and I get nothing done. I have to be very focused otherwise my day is wasted. My family is the most important thing to me. I don’t work at night, it’s the only time I have with my husband and he needs me too. Weekends are all about family, quality time and going to church.

6. What have been the hardships of running your own business?

Time Time Time!!!!! I have learnt so much as I do everything myself (design, model, website management etc) but time is always against me. Management of time is my biggest struggle but also getting the brand name out there. Starting a brand is no joke and only once I started did I realize that I’m not the only person trying to do something like this. I have to constantly stay on top of my game but at the same time, this takes time, so it’s my biggest struggle. Managing myself and my time.

7. What have been the highlights?

I’ve had the opportunity to learn so much about a world I actually had no clue existed. I also found a friend in my mentor and realized through this that life isn’t just black or white. There’s something magical about friendship. I’ve also learnt a lot about myself. I can really do anything I put my mind to and I really am capable of doing things no matter how uncomfortable it is. For instance, I am the model for Muppie Lounge and this was not easy, but I did it and it all worked out okay.

8. What advice do you have for other women who are on the cusp of taking the leap into entrepreneurship?

If you can picture yourself doing it, do it. Dream bigger than the ordinary, higher than expectations, wider than limits and further than any destination. Everything starts with a dream and then that first step. It’s okay to be scared, it’s even okay to have doubt. The trick is to act in spite of it or because of it. Rise above all your fears and do it anyway. It always turns out okay and we are capable of a lot more than we realize.

9. How can we get in touch with you?
My website is Muppie Lounge and I blog over at Mom Just Saying
I can 100% vouch for Muppie Lounge products. Here is a review that I wrote on the brand. I have since become a loyal customer and cannot wait for the new range in September!
