Women’s Month Mompreneur #27 – Yvette Hess – Artist, Writer, Blogger and Mental Health Advocate

In light of August being Women’s Month, I thought it would be the perfect time to promote some hard working mums. You could find the service provider you were looking for or be inspired to take that leap you’ve been dreaming of.

1. Tell me a little about yourself without including details of your family and work (it’s tough I know 😂)

I’m Yvette Hess and I’m a free spirited woman with a lot of love to give!  I enjoy people, working with people and making people happy. Yes, that sounds so cheesy I know. I love laughing and making people laugh. I’m only 32 but I feel 50, only because I have lived such a full life. I was born in Mitchell’s Plain in Cape Town but I grew up in the Free State. I’ve travelled abroad, to Malaysia and the Middle East- Iran and Qatar. I live in Mosselbay at the moment. All my experiences tie into who I am, my story and my brand.

2. How many kids do you have and what are their ages?

I have three boys ages 11, 5 and 4.

3. What is your side hustle? And when did you start?

I’m a visual artist, writer, blogger and mental health advocate. I started just over 2 years ago (going onto year 3 soon).

4. What did you do before starting your own business AND what made you leave?

I was an IT Auditor at one of the big four audit firms. There were loads of complications with my youngest son, both during the pregnancy and after he was born. My mental health and wellbeing were  suffering and that prompted me to take time off in my career.

5. How do you allocate your time between work and family?

This is a tough one! I think in the beginning, you’re trying to do all you can, and learning as much as possible. This takes ALL your time, but I try to be fully present when I am available. Tools like scheduling content for social media etc has helped me to be more available.

6. What have been the hardships of running your own business?

Definitely finding a balance between what I am able to do and what I can delegate/ automate. The other issue for me, was trying to not get distracted by home chores like laundry.  The expectation of others for me to do laundry or other random things, just because I am working from home was also a big adjustment. Because in the end, you’re doing everything, including running a business!

7. What have been the highlights?

One of the biggest highlights was when my two youngest sons went as entrepreneurs to school for career day! The other is seeing more and more people trusting my brand and what I have to offer.

8. What advice do you have for other women who are on the cusp of taking the leap into entrepreneurship?

Take care of yourself! Yes, bubble baths if you need them but also be gentle on yourself. There’s loads to learn and knocks to take. Try not to judge yourself too harshly. Be kind to yourself!

9. How can we get in touch with you?
