I received a Kindle for Christmas and it has completely changed my life! Reading is a more than a hobby for me, it’s a passion and often times an addiction. I need to read. Losing myself in a story is still the magical experience it was when I was a kid immersing myself in a Famous Five adventure.
Since becoming a parent I have struggled to find the time to read actual physical books as much as I would like. The next best option was reading on my iPhone which I resisted for the longest time (snobby me) but once I got used to it, I was hooked!
The Kindle is next level. Having the one device that is purely for reading means there’s no other social media distractions. I can just…read!

The story is set in the 1950s in Quebec where the French and English live and love grudgingly alongside each other. Maggie is a daddy’s girl with a passion for horticulture and dreams of taking over her father’s seed shop. As a young teenager, she falls in love with the handsome, and very French, Gabriel who lives on the farm next door.
In an effort to nip the growing romance in the bud, her parents send her off to a relatives farm for the summer and that’s when Maggie’s life changes direction forever.
Maggie falls pregnant and is forced to give up her baby for adoption but not before she names the little girl Elodie. What follows is a mother’s journey to find her child and a child’s struggle to survive in the harsh reality of government funded institutions.
My thoughts
I first thought that this would be a romance but the story is focused a lot more on the parent-child dynamic. The romance angle was pretty lackluster to be honest. I can ignore that though because the rest of the plot was really well thought out. Following Elodie’s journey broke my heart. I felt physically sick at one point and had to take a break from the story.
This is one of those books that will stay at the back of your mind for a while after you read it and if you’re like me, you will think of alternate endings or changes to the plot that would have made for a happier story.
