Plot
The story starts with a horrifying mass murder that is quickly attributed to a terrorist attack. Deputy Police Commissioner Colomba Caselli seems to be the only person who thinks that the event was too neatly packaged. She tries to investigate further but keeps getting blocked. When no-one at the police department is willing to listen, let alone help her, Colomba calls on Dante Torre to assist.
Dante is himself the victim of a heinous crime. He spent most of his childhood as a captive in a concrete silo, which inadvertently taught him how to master facial cues and body language. Colomba and Dante follow the trail of the most terrifying type of killer, one who believes that she is already dead.
My thoughts
LOVED IT! As soon as I started this book I realized that it was actually a sequel. Normally I would stop reading and then go find the prequel but this story had me hooked. It is quite fast paced both in terms of the plot and the writing style which I quite enjoy. Nothing is exactly as it seems so assume nothing. This is part of the reason why I finished the book in a night. Dante has a lot of Mentalist vibes with an extra dash of claustrophobia and social anxiety. He’s basically a high functioning drug addict but I found him really likable. I didn’t really get attached to Colomba but I think most of her character development must have happened in the first book.
The twist at the end really threw me for a loop! If you read the book I’d love to know if you had any suspicions. I don’t want to give anything away but I will say that you should rather read the first book ‘Kill the Father’ first because there’s a lot of references to the back story.
Rating
8/10 (I’m pretty sure I would have given it a 9/10 had I read the prequel)
