Women’s Month Mompreneur #12 – Martie Cronje – Virtual Assistant

In light of August being Women’s Month, I thought it would be the perfect time to promote some hard working mums. You could find the service provider you were looking for or be inspired to take that leap you’ve been dreaming of.


1. Tell me a little about yourself without including details of your family and work (it’s tough I know 😂)

I’m the youngest of 4, born in George. We used to move around quite a bit due to my dad’s work.  I went to school in Pretoria and completed my secretarial studies in Stellenbosch.  It turned out that ‘Stellies’ was a great place for studying and finding a husband!  For as long as I can remember I have always done something creative, whether it was sewing, drawing or dancing.  I used to make most of my clothes for work and made my wedding dress almost 25 year’s ago (with help from my mother-in-law).

2. How many kids do you have and what are their ages?  

I have 3 – Sean (almost 23), Andrea (19) and Suanne (17)

3. What is your side hustle? And when did you start?  

Complete VA started on the 1st of October 2016, born out of my passion for admin.  I love what I do, assisting business owners and entrepreneurs with the basic function of every business:  administration; so that they can focus on growing their business.  I am not a typical VA, only working virtually, as I also assist clients on-site, e.g. do their office filing, or attend meetings with clients to take notes or minutes.  Complete VA offers a Complete Virtual Assistant experience.

4. What did you do before starting your own business AND what made you leave?  

I have been a Personal Assistant for most of my career, working my way up from a receptionist / secretary, working in a small company where you learn quickly to do what is required to make the office tick.  We researched Virtual Assistant about 10 – 15 year’s ago.  The industry wasn’t ready then but with technology and companies allowing their staff to work flexitime or even remotely, it changed from a dream to action.  My last manager travelled extensively so we had to rely on technology to communicate – this was a big motivating factor to start the business as I saw it working practically.

3. How do you allocate your time between work and family?

Our son left home about 2 years ago, so it’s just hubby and his girls at home.  Having  a 2nd year student and a Grade 11 learner in the house, our week day afternoons and some evenings are usually spent working.  We eat together as a family, which is our catch-up time.  We try and spend more quality time together over weekends, which is sometimes tricky while navigating the girls social calendars.

4. What have been the hardships of running your own business?  

It can be very lonely at times, which is why I joined a professional networking organisation- my own sales team, so to speak.  Not necessarily a hardship, but a lesson was how to adjust from an employee mindset to a business owner mindset.

5. What have been the highlights?

When I could cover my own debit orders at the end of my 2nd month.

6. What advice do you have for other women who are on the cusp of taking the leap into entrepreneurship?  

Take time to do your research on your products or services. Don’t be afraid to accept the challenge. Don’t be scared to make that call to connect with someone you might think is ‘out of your league’. Set up systems before you start. Find a mentor. Network with likeminded business people. Remember it is only outside your comfort zone that you will grow so believe in yourself.  Enjoy every moment – the tough ones and the amazing ones.
